World kidney day is a global campaign which is celebrated on 2nd thursday in March, where March is also known as kidney month.
Let's gain some knowledge of Kidney on World Kidney Day..
Shaped like limia beans; lie against posterior abdominal wall, behind peritoneum at level of last thoracic and first three lumbar vertebrae; right kidney slightly lower than left.
- External Structures: Hilum, renal capsule
- Internal structures: cortex, medulla, pyramids, columns, papillae, calyces, pelvis .
- Blood Flow in the kidney: Kidney receives 20% of cardiac output during rest; reduced to 2% to 4% during physical or emotional stress. Abdominal aorta gives rise renal arteries, which enter the hilum of each kidney; eventually branch into afferent arterioles, which enter glomerular capillary beds. Efferent arterioles leave the glomerular capillary bed.
- Nephron: Anatomic and functional unit of a kidney; approximately 1 million per kidney. Functions via principles of filteration, reabsorption, and secretion.
- Collecting tubules: Final osmotoic reabsorption of most of the remaining water in urine occurs; under antidiuretic hormone influence.
- Urine description/composition
- Amount: 1.5L/day average (30ml/hr)

- Odor: aromatic; food and drugs alter odor and color
- Specific gravity: 1.005 to 1.030 is average
- Urine pH: Usually acidic (4.5 to 7.5 is average)
- Feed the healthy diet
- Keep hydrated
- Reduce salt intake
